| Friday May 23, 2008 W.Va. court rejects appeal of $404 million natural gas verdict by The Associated Press The West Virginia Supreme Court has rejected gas and electric utility NiSource Inc.'s appeal of a $404 million verdict in a class-action lawsuit brought on behalf of thousands of West Virginia property owners. Plaintiffs' attorney Mike Carey says he's pleased the court decided Thursday not to hear the case. Carey adds that the plaintiffs he's told about the decision are excited as well. NiSource Chief Executive Robert Skaggs Jr., on the other hand, says he's surprised and disappointed. The suit accused NiSource and several other companies of failing to make proper royalty payments to thousands of property owners who'd leased gas rights. Carey says NiSource is responsible for most of the damages. |
